Try it. Have the conversation about what short term commitments are available, but don't sleep on it. I can all but guarantee that when you leave the gym feeling accomplished, satisfied, and like you just had a great time, you're going to want to keep going back day after day. Fitness isn't athletes, young people and influencers. Fitness is for everyone.
